Portbury Docks – Caley Oceans Systems Installation of Pipework & Hydraulics

HB Hydraulics played a pivotal role in the completion of six liners for the Hinkley Point C project .

These liners each weighing 270 tonnes, will circulate 120,000 litres of water per second from the Bristol Channel to the nuclear power station. This travels through five miles of underground tunnels to provide cooling to Hinkley Point C’s systems.

The liners were lowered through 40 metre steel casings placed in the seabed earlier in the year, the structures reach depths of 25 metres below sea level.

Each liner was designed with a world first, innovative pre-installed isolation cap. This allowed safe, ongoing access to the cooling water tunnels for the remaining construction works. This was prior to them being fully removed and stored for use, should future tunnel maintenance works be required.

Our task was to manufacture and install all critical components within the liner including pipework, hydraulics and all relating brackets inside each separate liner.

This was a great project for HB Hydraulics, overcoming challenges to successfully deliver all works to our client, on schedule whilst meeting the quality standard of the project.
